Every year through the Hands for Hope campaign, we come together as a community and share the blessings of the season with our neighbors in need. This year, the need is greater than ever, and we are increasing our goal to serve even more families who have been affected by COVID-19. On one of three distribution days, registered families will receive a meal kit including a frozen turkey or ham and all the sides to fix a holiday meal together at home.
Donations to the Hands for Hope event not only enable us to serve holiday meal kits to families in November and December—they also support our emergency food assistance program and mobilize important partnerships to address food insecurity in Central Texas. Hands for Hope is an extension of El Buen's year-round food pantry. Through our emergency drive-through operation initiated at the start of the pandemic, over 15,000 pantry visits have occurred—four times the normal visitation rate for our food pantry—helping 700 families put food on the table each week. This year, the Hands for Hope event will adopt this drive-through distribution system to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, and clients.
